I want to learn Hakka, a rare dialect of Chinese.?

Post by loganfuller »

I want to learn Hakka, which is quite a rare dialect of Chinese. I would like to know of any books or tutors that I can learn from.
Also if I am unable to obtain any teaching material, what would be the nearest equivalent, Mandarin or Cantonese.

Hi,

You can find a list of Hakka dictionaries at http://www.hakkadictionary.com. Grammar is almost the same as Cantonese.

BTW Hakka is not a rare dialect. Is is on of the five biggest dialects of Chinese and has as many speakers as Cantonese. The difference is that Cantonese is spoken in a well-defined area whilst Hakka is more spread throughout the country.

Standard Chinese or Modern Standard Chinese, also known as Mandarin or Putonghua, is the official language of the People's Republic of China[3] and Republic of China (Taiwan), and is one of the four official languages of Singapore.
