1. In Minnan dialect, Singapore was called "sit8 lat8 pho1" 实叻坡"; it is "坡" pho1, not "埠" pO1. (Cantonese called it "星架埠").

2.All three names高丽,朝鲜,新罗generally refer to Korea as a whole even though each of them might have been based in the northern or southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Korea was divided into north and south only after the Korean war (1951-53).

3. San Francisco was called "金山" gold mountain but changed to old gold mountain "旧金山" ku7 kim1 sua*1 after gold mines were discovered in Melbourne which was called new gold mountain "新金山" sin1 kim1 sua*1.

4."Lu7 Song3", "Ka1 La1 Pa1", "Sit8 Lat8" were each extended to mean the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaya (inclusive of Singapore) respectively.
To people in Singapore, the Malay Peninsula was jiu1 hu2 "州府" and Indonesia was e7 jiu1 hu2 "下州府".

5."lam5 yiu*5" 南洋 means the whole South-east Asia. Other equivalent terms are " tong1 yiu*5" or "tang1 yiu*" 东洋 meaning Japan, and "se1 yiu*5" or "sai1 yiu*5" 西洋meaning Europe. These terms originated from the old Chinese concept that China was the centre of the whole world, surrounded by four seas, the east, south, west and north seas.
