I'd like some help with Shanghainese slang-please help

Postby mavericker » Thu Apr 12, 2007 6:21 pm

Hello. I'm interested in and am doing research on Shanghainese youth, street and college slang. What are Shanghainese slangs for:

tomboy
tough guy
tough girl
guy prone to fighting
girl prone to fighting
punk
ruffian
deliquent girl
delinquent boy

Please list as many slang translations as possible. :D

Here are some Shanghainese terms I know:

bad girls la se1
bad boy liu3 maang1
elder brother gu1 gu / ah gu1
younger brother di di1 / ah di1
elder sister ja ja1 / ah ja1
younger sister me me1 / ah me1
comrade dong3 zi1

Can any of these terms be used as slangs?

Hello. I'm doing research on Wu slang.

Someone told me "se pei" is a Shanghainese slang for "tough female".

Can someone please help me out with Shanghainese (Wu) slang?

I'm a shanghainese and live in Shanghai now.
You know it is very difficult to describe something or somebody with any other foreign languages which the meaning is as same as original.
Shanghainese belongs to wu language and a little bit different from Mandarin including words, grammer, pronunciation and so on if you know mandarin and Shanghainese.
Probably punk means 小阿飞
ruffian means 流氓
tough girl means za ba

Hello billxiao-thank you for your responses and your help. :D

I've seen the term "awu" used in Shanghai dialect which means "good-for-nothing".
I've seen the term "硬骨头 (ying4gu3tou2)" used, which means "tough guy"-is this a Shanghainese term?

Are there any Shanghinese slang terms for a "tomboy", or a "female that likes to do "guy" things", or "masculine female"?
