"in substitution"

Postby diane » Sat Aug 16, 2003 11:40 pm

I looked up the word "substitute for" which in mandarin is "ti dai" or in Cantonese would be "tai doi" . Do cantonese people use "tai doi" colloquially or do they use another word for the word "substitute" such as in the example... "I drank milk as a substitute for ice cream." How would you use that?

I guess this question also relates to how one would say "instead of" since "substitute" is similar to "instead of". How wuld you say, for example, "I drank water instead of soda." or "I went out with Her instead of You."

Thanks...:)
Get back to me ASAP=)

2. for milk and ice-cream sentence, ngo5 jem2 naai5 doi6 syut3 gou1

3. for water and soda sentence, one of the expressions is ngo5 mou5 jem2 dou3 soda, ngo5 jem2 zo2 seoi2
