Meaning of "Punti"

Postby Jake » Tue Feb 10, 2004 4:51 pm

Can explain the meaning of Punti and with what characters the word (referring to the ethnic Cantonese natives in contrast to the immigrant Hakka group) is written? Thank you so much, I am of mixed Hakka and Punti ancestry and was taught that punti was a derrogatory Hakka word and also a Cantonese word meaning "native." Just wondering,
Jake

本地 native, local, indigenous. I'm a Hakka with my parents coming from Shataukok, HK. We also say 本地 to refer to Cantonese speakers, whose language is 本地話.
