You could do it on the cheap by planning it all yourself. However it depends on where you want to go.

The trains are very cheap and so the transport around china is very cheap. For places to stay there is tons of Chinese people who would let you stay for free in exchange you chat to their daughters or sons in English.

However if you were do plan by yourself learning some Mandarin in really important because things will go wrong and being able to speak the language it important.

Go to shanghai or beijing first, take a bunch loads of Mandarin lessons and then travel around by yourselfs. The price will most likely be the same because of the Mandarin lessons but your experience will be more unique.

Also if you travel by yourself you will have to use your Mandarin more if you go with a tour you will let them talk for you. So you will learn quicker by yourself.

Good luck .

Get a good road based travel book. They have basic expressions for everyday situations, and use them when the situation comes up. Body language, hand signals, and a sketch pad help bridge the communication divide. Everyone will want to talk English with you so you often can pick up a fast friend to guide you anywhere in China. Have fun.

In general, mountainous South China displays more linguistic diversity of the apartment in northern China. In some parts of southern China, the dialect is a big city can be somewhat understood by close neighbors
