Re: Benzi/Original character

Although I disagree with many of Aokh's proposed original characters (you're never going to convince me of 昧!), I think 及 actually makes a lot of sense. Is somebody declaring war here ? Friend, 昧 is what I use to document Penang Hokkien [bē] to differentiate from 未 [buē], it's the proposed characte...

Re: Benzi/Original character

I am not sure if I make sense, just to clarify a few things. I do not know, and do not believe that Hokkien we speak now is exactly what it sounded in middle Chinese. Every language might have carried some left-over from middle Chinese. Hainanese or Taishanese might have things older than those in H...

Re: Benzi/Original character

I still dun have an answer to that, but I know characters are invented to record what we speak. I guess dictionaries are just references. 共 does make sense, of course. 及 is pronounced khap in Cantonese though, and it does carry " and " meaning today in Mandarin. There are more common characters that...

Re: "Sampai" in Penang

I also hear sim-tsi all the time, including Korean. Taiwanese programmes may not always say the right thing, as things may change in Taiwan. Like 牽掛 - I dunno why it's pronounced tshian-kua...... Hm......

Re: Benzi/Original character

共 might make sense. But do make sure we all have a right logic when it comes to looking for the "correct" or "reasonable" character. Characters are invented to record what we speak, so...... Using 共 or 佮 or even 及 to record "and", should all work well. Of course 佮 seems a little strange to most peop...

Hi Mark Yong: Your example is absolutely fabulous. That didn't cross my mind. The greatest example ever...... Thank you ! Hi SimL: About the motivation to master Mandarin, you will not be banned from this forum. Come on, we're all trying to learn something together here. However your future co...

Re: Wa ma tsai ! (I also know...)

I wonder *what* we are capturing, by having some team of (non-native speaking) linguists talk to one or two native-speakers for 5 years, and then publishing a grammar/dictionary. The full richness of each language can only be *experienced* - by growing up in it, by having people treat you unfairly ...

Re: Wa ma tsai ! (I also know...)

In my variant, or any other Hokkiens spoken in China and Taiwan, I think ma is not used as a question. What I meant was a "rather rhetorical form". It's not a question but a confirmation. It may have sounded like a question, which is not directly expressed in verbal form. 汝 ma 是我个朋友。 If I may exagge...

Re: Wa ma tsai ! (I also know...)

不也 is not the negation of 也 but rather a rhetorical form of "also".

伊 ma 是汝个朋友
他不也是你的朋友

He is also your friend / He is also your friend wat (Manglish) / Isn't he also your friend ?

Re: Translating Chinese name to Hokkien

Oh, no-lah, no-lah. Those are not variants. They're just some individual preferences I have so far come across with. One same character is pronounced the same, but written differently depending on the parents because there's no strict romanisation mah. If you ask for my suggestion, I would go for: 王...

Re: Wa ma tsai ! (I also know...)

Hm...... Interesting.

I think 亦 can be iah8, can be a4. Furthermore, I try to keep an open mind that an old language like Hokkien, should not be restricted to the 反切 based on the tone spoken during a particular period. I try to be open-lah......

Wa ma tsai ! (I also know...)

Couple of days ago when I said something in Mandarin, it struck me. 你不也去過那個地方? Does anyone know the 嘛 we always say in Hokkien, could have been something "more concrete" than just an exclamation word ? I then tried to look up for 不也 on the internet. It's used very widely in Mandarin, even myself, th...

Re: A Hokkien loan into Mandarin

Probably pure pig-headedness on their part as they view themselves as the ultimate authority on Chiense histpry, language, culture, etc. Tell me about it ! I hate it when people say 林吉特 as Ringgit, which is known as 零吉 or 令吉 in our homeland. Then this 浮羅交怡 as in Langkawi, is widely called 蘭卡威 in Ch...
