Re: How do I use hán-kiânn 罕行?

I need to add my non-native-speaker disclaimer, since I haven't in some time. Niuc may be better able to shed some light on this word. Amhoanna, thank you for explaining about this word. So far I have never used it. My mom's understanding of it is the same as yours, but according to her it is hardl...

Hi Sim

Yes, hopefully this forum will maintain at least this level of activity.

Thanks for asking, I have replied in "Childhood games" thread.

Re: Childhood games

Hi Sim As usual, I also enjoy reading your sharing very much. I never played with "chiū-leng-chí" as a young boy. Btw, from what I know, 奶 in Hokkien can be "ni / ne / lin / ling / leng". My variant has the first three pronunciations with different usage: 1. "lin&q...

Re: 金門話

I like the accent, sounds very musical and easy on the ears. It's like first time too I hear those kind of E and I in Hokkien. Are your vowels like that too? The ones they represent by er and ir? Yes, the vowels are identical, including those represented by "er" and "ir". So the...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Sorry, it does indicate the difference between o and o•, but I was misled by 所.
Is the literary reading of 所 só (as in the pdf) and not só•? Online dictionaries I searched only have só•.

Re: Interesting black and white Taiwanese movie

Sim, thanks for the link. I have only watched it for a while due to time constraint. Although I can understand it, it is indeed not the typical Taiwanese accent we hear today on media... interesting to hear 台北 accent (thanks to Amhoanna for the info).

Re: Singaporean Movie: It's a great great world (toā-sè-kài

FutureSpy, from what I know, this movie is not meant to be (fully) historically accurate. As you have noted, I don't think many Singaporean spoke Mandarin before 80's. Btw, although my variant is not exactly Singaporean Hokkien and I have no time to be a tutor, I can skype with you sometimes if both...

Re: 金門話

Thanks a lot, FutureSpy! My "father tongue" is actually 金門話, but I grew up speaking 同安話 (which is my mother tongue). Anyway, I found them very similar to each other. The vowels are practically identical, including nasalization of 揀 as káiⁿ (instead of kíng). From that website, 金門話's tones ...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Thanks so much, Cathy! I really like the pdfs, especially 三字經. The Hokkien romanization (POJ) is very helpful, especially for words that we do not use in daily conversation. I notice that it doesn't indicate the difference between o and o•, otherwise it looks perfect. FutureSpy, thank you for the li...

Hi Yuminnan, thanks for posting the image again, so actualy it is the same as what you have typed. What I list below are just possible characters. It's very hard to know the exact ones since Hokkien also has a lot of homophones. Moreover, the spelling doesn't indicate the tones. Oe Eng An ...

Re: Háp and Háh 合

In my variant, uì-kuâⁿ 畏寒 is used to described the feeling/sense, with or without actual shivering. My usage of cùn/tsùn (顫) is the same as Sim's. 寒到會顫·个 = kuâⁿ kà ē cùn ·ê = cold until causing shivering = It's so cold until (I also) shiver. In my variant, háp means united, to unite; while háh means...
