Re: Huili̍ppin place names, Hoklo- and Mando-based sinicizat

It occurred to me that I or we could contact Johnny Young directly for future projects. I bet he's knowledgeable and genuinely interested. M̄ koh unlike Ongmeister of Penang podcast fame, i sī ahboē se̍ksāi Aute'aló·'ā hit ê gíbûn coanka nātiāⁿ--lah. Ha! I just spotted this now, years after you wro...

Re: More words...about 300 I can't track down.

I haven't posted here for a while, as I've been catching up with entering a lot of the new vocab I have learnt from the podcasts. I had quite a good reception from the last round of questions so i'll share the findings here: 1) Torch/flashlight = chhiú-tiān-hóe 手電火 or just chhiú-tiān 手電 2) Tablemat,...

Re: 200 sentences in 6 Hakka dialects from Taiwan

It's pretty awesome, thanks again for these Futurespy. I'd like to get back into Hakka some day. Southern Taiwanese Si-yen was originally my dialect of choice, but there is something really tempting about Raoping,or indeed any dialect in which 水 is read as "fi"! I guess I may go for Hoiliu...

Re: Sentences in Hokkien/Foochow/Hakka/Ami/Atayal/Bunun/Puyu

Wow, this is great, thanks Futurespy! I tried my hand at Atayal many years ago, without any materials at hand. People ten years older than me were good at speaking it but those ten years younger usually not so good. I used to use Atayal words in Mandarin sentences with Atayal friends as a secret lan...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Haha...look what I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iwnmksbb04 Sounds very Moiyen to me. I was listening out for a few special vocab items that are distinctively Hoiliuk i.e. "voi" for 話 and "phon" for 飯. In this song I heard "va" for the former. Hoiliuk also has ...

Re: 金門話

Cathy, if I'm not mistaken, I remember have read someone describing something similar as being one of the reasons why one should take some time learning Shanghainese. I'm just not sure who and where to quote it here... I am guessing it's William Hannas in his "Asia's Orthographic Dilemma"...

Re: 金門話

Can't resist replying to this! Something that really puts me down is that whenever you say you're interested in a minority language, people ask you "Oh, why don't you learn _PUT HERE THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE NAME_? Pretty much everyone in the country can speak it!" Well.... my slightly offens...

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Excellent! Thank you Futurespy! I had another version of this in a colour scan locked for editing, it's great to have an open source copy like that. I should really make a dropbox account for stuff like that that I own, not that there is so much of it, now that I can no longer access the stock of bo...

Re: Interesting black and white Taiwanese movie

I'm very pleased to hear that your knowledge of written Chinese has progressed to that level, Sim. No-one will be able to call you Ang-moh-sai any more! You'll also be able to read many more things about Hokkien and utilise about three times as many dictionaries. I have to say, i started liste...

Re: More words...about 300 I can't track down.

Wow! Thanks Sim! I was thinking of doing a transcription myself, but I'm glad you feel up the the task! There are many "higher register" Hokkien words which I'm completely unfamiliar with. Examples are "gi-guan", "sio-huan", "i-kien", "am-pai" (or &q...

Re: More words...about 300 I can't track down.

I'm about to start a new job next week, so won't be able to manage it, unfortunately. I hope someone records a few. It would be interesting to hear Hokkien used in this context. Back in Taiwan in the 1990's and 2000's it was usual to campaign in Taiwanese where I was living (Taichung and Tainan), ev...

Great! I'm happy some of us are still around! Many thanks for you answers. There is a lot of fascinating material here. Actually, it seems to happen on a fairly regular basis that something I ask about here pops up on the Penang Hokkien podcast a few days later. Kiat-la and suiⁿ-kam were mentioned. ...

Here are ten words that I have already asked about on Facebook in the Penang Hokkien Dictionary project plus the answers I received about many of them, as well as my own observations. I would be interested to hear what forum members have to say about them, and about the answers that I have already r...

Penang Hokkien Dictionary Project

As many of you may know. I started a Penang Hokkien Dictionary Project page on Facebook in order to collect the last bunch of words for the Hokkien Dictionary. On that page I basically do the same thing I have been doing here, and I hope that having a few more people look at my questions will help s...
