Re: Pls assist to translate chinese name to dialect

Hi vinc1281: I am glad to know that you and your wife intend to preserve our culture by spelling your baby's name in ancestral language. ^_^ However, it's quite risky if you provide just phonetic of Mandarin without Chinese characters. The possible syllables in Mandarin are lesser by 50% than Hokkie...

I miss the Xiamen Hokkien announcement heard in Xiamen Airlines before.

人生路眞長,白鷺常湊陣 (tàu-tīn)。更再一每 (tsìt-pái) 感謝您乘坐廈門航空兮航班。飛機更置滑行,請您毋通拍開行李格 and so on......

Something stroked me today. I remember someone asked me about why people say 無要緊 as bō-iau-kín and sometimes bō-iang-kín......

Would it be 無用緊 ? Chinese Malaysians often say 不用緊 instead of 不要緊, I suppose it's simply bō-iong-kín...... ^^

Dear Yeleixingfeng: Because it's not 龍尾...... :P Paya Terubong is called 壟尾 lióng-bué and the " i " is usually omitted, so it sounds like lóng-bué . In Mandarin, it's lǒng-wěi so you will hear it as lóng-wěi . Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru or Batu Maung are all Malay names. There was somehow an ...

I have been reading since morning - whenever colleagues are not around. :P I am downloading the whole folder, I think it's a great resource for my dictionary ! Whatever words already used in here should be considered "approved", like 雪文 although etymologically it does not make much sense. ...

Re: Penang Hokkien Vocabulary Questions (Part 2)

Given that 福建 Hok-Kien is China's tea province, how would 龍井 be pronounced - liong 5 ceng 2 or leng 5 cεⁿ 2? The reason I am asking is because I absolutely hate it when I have 點心 tiam 2 sim 1 in Penang, and the waitresses end up using Cantonese for all the food and drink names! 龍井 is not fro...

Re: Hokkien-Only Policy

They're part of the 56 ethnic groups of People's Republic of China. Her great-great-grandparents moved to China from South Korea...
