Thesis research survey: Chinese 2nd language learners

Hi. A friend of mine is doing research on how Chinese is taught. He isn't getting much of a response and is hoping people with experience learning Chinese can help him. He has a form he has created to give him feedback. It takes less than ten minutes to complete. If you're willing to help out you ca...

Re: Cantonese/Mandarin differences

It's possible that you're dealing with a problem with encoding. Try switching the encoding back to simplified characters. It may be that when the person typed it up that it was viewed in traditional but the actual encoding was simplified. Look at http://www.mandarintools.com and see the encoding con...

Re: What does it mean?

Since "bou bui" can be either an adjective or a noun, I guess it could be either.

Re: Cantonese translation

Ngo Ho Ngooi Neih! Ngo=I Ho=very Ngooi=love Neeih=you I guess you didn't read what the person wrote in the first post. "Not in the man loves a woman way." So, no, that isn't really how you'd say that. /ngoh/ ngoi /neih/ would probably be romantic love, although there are some exceptions. Note the C...

Re: Cantonese translation

Expressing deep affection explicitly is not something typically done in Chinese. As Dylan said, you can say "sehk" to express sort of parental affection, but otherwise you wouldn't say that. I find many Chinese who choose to express something like that default to an English word. e.g. /ngoh/ /hou/ C...

dim

According to my sources it is the same character. 點

But these are clearly two separate morphemes. Related in a way, but separate.

a touching subject

Matt, As far as using /dim/ for touching is concerned, I'm not sure if it is the same character or not. But it would make sense if it were since when you /dim/ someone or something you are talking to even the slightest distrubance of it. For example, m'ou /dim/ /ngoh/! would mean "don't touch me" an...

Re: 李秋霞

The IME will let you input the characters. If you just want to view them you can just download Traditional Chinese Language Support from Windows Update. Netscape has a similar update available.

You can also use NJStar's demo version of NJStar Communicater at www.njstar.com.

Another forum

I hope this isn't considered impolite. I run a Chinese language website and have begun a forum there. I would appreciate anyone interested in Cantonese posting questions or comments there:

Re: Help me

You can try my website. It has a few introductory lessons in Chinese (4 in Cantonese 4 in Mandarin). But Chinese is not somehing you learn casually. You will need a live tutor to make any real progress and you need to dedicate lots of time to this effort.

Re: word processing

I just want to point out the differences between the programs already suggested (which are great) Twinbridge Chinese Partner works with a standard word processor and inserts the Chinese code into the document and also acts to interpret Chinese code into character output on the screen. It is excellen...
